Local man praised for volunteering services
BRIAN Hull, a Friend of the Mackay Entertainment & Convention Centre (formerly Friend of the Theatre), has won the 2009 Jack Shaw Award for volunteering services.
The Jack Shaw Award, also known as the Quiet Achiever Award, was named after Jack Shaw, a long-time local who sadly passed away several years ago.
Community Services & Facilities portfolio councillor George Christensen said Brian was one of many worthy recipients for the award.
“Brian has been associated with the Friends of the Mackay Entertainment & Convention Centre since the original inception of the Friends 22 years ago,” Cr Christensen said.
“He provides countless hours of voluntary service each week, is an integral member of the Friends Executive Committee, and is a familiar and welcoming face to visitors at the MECC.”
Cr Christensen said Brian’s gentlemanly disposition, years of experience and dedication to the theatre and volunteering made him an excellent choice for this year’s award.
“We see many similar attributes in Brian as those did in Jack who truly epitomized volunteering services donating thousands of hours of time to assist at the entertainment in a range of duties covering stage duties as well as Front of House,“ he said.
“Brian is often seen helping with his wife Bonnie and is a true asset to the region.”
Cr Christensen said this award is just one way that council goes about recognising the heroes in our community.
“If you know someone who also goes above and beyond their call of duty in the Mackay community, nominate them for an Australia Day award before December 11.”
Brian will be awarded the Jack Shaw Perpetual Trophy at the final Morning Melodies concert of the year on Friday, November 27 at 10am.
Jack Shaw’s widow, Betty Shaw who is also a volunteer at the MECC will award Brian the trophy.
