Volunteers thanked for their tireless work

Mackay Regional Council has sent a small gift and a thank you card to all its volunteers to pay tribute to their tireless work as part of National Volunteer Week celebrations.

Mayor Col Meng said many council facilities would simply not operate if it were not for the time and energy of volunteers.

“We are grateful for the support of so many tireless workers and it is important we recognise their efforts,” he said.

Council relied on the support of about 620 volunteers who help at Artspace, the region’s five Libraries, Sarina Sugar Shed, the State Emergency Service and Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre.

Terry White Chemists and Tyrepower have partnered with council to provide a gift voucher to those who volunteer at any of the council facilities.

Cr Meng said volunteers at the Sarina and Mirani Museums provided valuable support and without that such facilities would be difficult to maintain.

Residents also provided input at a number of council committees, setting aside time from their busy schedules to help shape the future of our region.

Cr Meng commended the two local businesses for their generosity and community spirit.

“Volunteers do not seek acknowledgement, but it is fantastic to see two local businesses show their appreciation with such a gesture,” he said.

National Volunteer Week (May 11-17) provides a platform to highlight the role of volunteers in our communities and to say thank you to the more than 5 million Australians who volunteer.

Community Services portfolio councillor George Christensen said volunteers contribute more than 700 million hours of community service to so many areas, including community health care, heritage and arts, environment conservation and sports.

“Imagine where we would be without our volunteers,” Cr Christensen said.

“I encourage all residents to consider volunteering because in these uncertain economic times, now more than ever we need to support each other.”
