Opportunity of a lifetime up for grabs for one music class in the region

One lucky music class from the Mackay region will get the opportunity to perform, watch, and meet world renowned pianist David Helfgott on Tuesday, August 17.

Mackay Regional Council’s Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre (MECC) in conjunction with Andrew McKinnon Promotions are delighted to announce this exciting opportunity for a lucky school in the region to perform in the MECC North foyer before David Helfgott’s recital. 

Mr Helfgott is acknowledged as one of the most remarkable musicians of our time and is well known thanks to the film Shine produced in1996 which was based on his life.

Community Services and Facilities portfolio councillor Karen May said the MECC is highly anticipating the spectacular performance and wants to welcome Mr Helfgott to Mackay in true style.

“This facility (MECC) was built for the community to enjoy and what better way to welcome such a famous performer than with a pre-show community piece highlighting our very own local talent,” Cr May said.

“I hope that schools will seize this opportunity and get involved as I believe this will be a truly amazing experience for our youth,” she said.

The winning music class must put on a short 15-minute recital or choral piece in the foyer of the MECC on the evening of the performance as the audience arrives for the 8pm show.

It’s easy to enter all classes have to do is simply submit a letter to the MECC telling them why your class would like to see David Helfgott’s performance and what your class will perform for him.  

All performing students will be given tickets for Mr Helfgott’s recital and will receive a personal introduction to him after the show.

Regrettably the class size is limited to no more than 50 students and all entries must be submitted to the MECC in writing by 5pm on Friday, July 30.
