Mackay’s population set to swell with string of conventions

Come next week it is likely that the region’s population will reach an all-time high as hundreds of visitors flock to Mackay to attend a series of high profile conventions.

The Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre (MECC) will play host to the Australian Local Government Association’s National Local Roads & Transport Congress from November 9 – 11, the North Queensland Lions Conference from November 13 – 15 and from today is showcasing the region to delegates at the Australian Engineers Conference.

Economic Development and Tourism portfolio councillor Dave Perkins said Mackay as a destination has become a lot more appealing to conference organisers.

“As a result of the regions fantastic new infrastructure, many new faces are entering the Mackay region which of course has fantastic flow-on effects for local business,” Cr Perkins said.  

Over the next week, a likely 800 delegates will temporarily enter the region. 

“Today’s forum will see 100 engineers learn about living and working in Northern Australia and includes plenary sessions and trade displays for visiting delegates – which the MECC is perfect to cater for,” said Cr Perkins.

“Federal Government and various State Government representatives will attend Monday’s transport congress where delegates will not only attend conferences and workshops, they will explore Mackay and surrounds, taking part in activities such as a trip to Eungella and a historic tour of Mackay City sights.”

“The week concludes with the Lions District Conference arriving in Mackay, where 300 wonderful community-minded people will be involved in various workshops, meetings and ceremonies,” said Cr Perkins.

With the arrange of service providers, accommodation, hospitality and tourism providers benefiting from the influx of people to Mackay, Cr Perkins said ensuring their time in the region was an enjoyable one was of high priority.

“From additional taxi rides, through to hotel room bookings and tourism packages, additional spending and visitors will enhance the growth of our region,” said Cr Perkins.
