FESTIVAL OF ARTS – Wet Sounds UK

Grab your swimmers and submerge yourself in an underwater theatre experience that has captured the imagination of the United Kingdom.

Wet Sounds UK allows theatre goers to take their swimmers to the performance and literally immerse themselves in sound and water.

In keeping with this year’s Festival theme of Light and Water, organisers were keen to secure the internationally-acclaimed performance for one show only on Tuesday, July 19 at 7pm at the Memorial Swim Centre.

Artist Joel Cahen and sound engineer Rebecca Horrox have produced an interactive experience where you actually feel the music through the water.

“The sound moves through the water so it sounds omni-directional rather than stereo,” said Joel.

Community Services and Facilities portfolio councillor Karen May said the heated Memorial Swim Centre will be transformed into a unique sound environment.

“This has been performed in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and the UK,” she said.

Wet Sounds invites guests to use the dual sound system above and below the water to create a unique live performance.

During their stay, Joel and Rebecca will conduct a free workshop for high school students on Monday, July 18. Bookings are essential and interested students should contact Festival and Events Officer, Jemma Carey on 4961 9765.

Cr May said this year’s Festival of Arts certainly had something for everyone, ranging from theatre, music, comedy and visual art.
