FESTIVAL OF ARTS – A Krakouer of a show!

With footy fever in the air, residents can experience and enjoy the thrill of the game in a slightly different arena thanks to a Mackay Region Festival of Arts performance, Krakouer!

The award winning play will premiere to the region, on Thursday, July 14 at the Lynette Denny Space at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre (MECC), Alfred Street at 11am and 8pm as part of their Australian tour.

Please note the venue, date and times have changed from the original publicised details as per the original printed program to enable specific technical requirements.

Mayor Col Meng said the touring production Krakouer! is based on two Australian Rules football greats, Jim and Phil Krakouer.

“What’s special about this performance is it brings in a unique audience that may not ordinarily visit a theatre or play production, and this is really what the Festival of Arts is all about, allowing people to encounter new experiences and step outside their comfort zones to enjoy the creative arts,” Cr Meng said.

“Krakouer! blends the love and passion that exists with both football and theatre, and if there is one show on the program to bring the fathers, brothers, uncles and partners along to, this is it.”

From Mount Barker in Western Australia’s south, Jim and Phil took the Australian football by storm in the early 1980s.

Krakouer! tells the story of the challenges they face in their rise to the top of their game; their skill, daring and resilience, both on and off the sporting field, and the controversy and adversity that has met them throughout their lives as they fought with, and for each other, against racial vilification, gambling addiction, an unforgiving legal system and personal tragedy.

Manager of Convention Precinct and Events Mark Fawcett said the MECC is also delighted to announce that Phil Krakouer will be in Mackay on Thursday (July 14) to kick off the tour.

“Phil will be conducting post show talks where the audience can participate in a Question and Answer session to find out more about this amazing indigenous football family,” he said.

Ticket prices range from adults $38, concession $35, Friends of the MECC/Festival $30 and children $22. You can either pre-purchase the tickets leading up to the event or before each show, for more details phone the box office on 4961 9777 or visit www.festivalmackay.org.au.
