Council’s convention centre to host climate change workshop
As part of its commitment to educating the community about the ongoing effects of climate change, Mackay Regional Council will host a free workshop at Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre on October 21 and 22.
Tailored to the needs of planners, engineers, policy makers and coastal infrastructure owners, the workshop – titled Estimating Sea Level Rise – will provide participants with information on design codes, risk-based planning and policies for new developments, property protection and maintenance.
Material will be presented by Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Co-operative Research Centre (ACE CRC) oceanographer Dr John Hunter who has more than 40 years experience researching climate change and sea levels.
Planning and Development portfolio councillor Di Hatfield said the two-day seminar was a fantastic opportunity for development industry representatives to gain strategic planning insight into the future development of coastal land.
“Climate change is a very real global issue that obviously will have a greater impact on coastal communities more so than others,” she said.
“Learning the importance of undertaking risk assessment prior to lodging a Development Application will save companies both time and money in the long term.”
Supported and hosted by Mackay Regional Council and co-funded by the Department of Climate Change and the ACE CRC, this workshop is one of 14 that will be presented around Australia.
