Council to hold Freight Summit to cater for growth

Mackay Regional Council will be holding a one day Freight Summit to hear from specialists in the industry about the needs of the long term freight industry to accommodate our growing community.

The Mackay region is one of the fastest growing regions in Queensland with an annual growth rate of around three per cent and rapid growth projected over the next twenty years, almost doubling of the population and traffic.

Mayor Col Meng said it’s paramount that we facilitate a debate between various stakeholders and organisations to help the freight industry sustain this growth.

“A growing community consumes more goods; food, household equipment, office supplies, and it’s important that the freight industry moves in response to this demand.”

The one day summit will bring together key representatives from a selected group of State Agencies in a collaborative environment, to exchange ideas, establish principles and guidelines and debate potential solutions in an interactive forum.

Presentations will be made by industry operators, Government regulators and council officers and will be supported by a specialist facilitator. A series of workshops will be held in the afternoon to examine possible solutions and changes that could be made to the current operational concerns of the freight industry.

Mayor Col Meng said in order for council and other agencies to put in place effective plans for the future, it is crucial that we speak to and listen to the people on the ground floor.

“No one knows the freight industry better than people who work in the industry day in and day out. Council wants to work with these specialists to benefit the community and the industry at large.’

Councillor Meng hopes both the State and Federal Members will be available to attend the summit.

“It is important that all levels of government are across the needs of our growing community and our freight industry.”

The one day Freight Summit will be held at the MECC on October 28, 2010.
