Citizenship ceremony celebrates Harmony Day

The Mackay region will welcome 68 new citizens next week on Monday, March 21 at a Citizenship Ceremony to be held at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre.

Monday (March 21) also marks Harmony Day; a special day where all Australians celebrate our cultural diversity.

Harmony Day provides the opportunity to celebrate what makes each Australian unique and share what we have in common.

Next week’s ceremony will see a diverse range of people from a variety of countries such as Fiji, Scotland, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and India make their pledge to becoming an Australian citizen.

Also, among the 68 participants are 19 South Africans, 18 Filipinos, and seven Brits.

The continuing message for Harmony Day is that ‘Everyone Belongs’.

Harmony Day began in 1999, and since then more than 25,000 Harmony Day events have been held.

So on Monday; why not get together with work colleagues, friends and family to celebrate the cultures that make our region a great place to live. Host a morning or afternoon tea with each person bringing along a plate of food from a different culture.
