Barnsey rocks out at MECC grand opening

The Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre (MECC) was officially opened by Premier Anna Bligh on Saturday before rock-sensation Jimmy Barnes took to the brand-new stage to give Mackay audiences one brilliant concert.

The opening ceremony was held on the front steps of the $29 million MECC where the Queensland Premier was joined by Mackay Regional Council Mayor Col Meng, Member of Mackay Tim Mulherin, Aboriginal elder Gary Mooney and Member for Whitsunday Jan Jarratt. Member for Mirani Ted Malone and Member for Dawson James Bidgood also joined the crowds to witness this important moment in Mackay's history.

At night, Barnsey proved he still has what it takes as audience members got to their feet for favourites such as Working Class Man and Lover Lover. Outside the live concert doors, crowds also enjoyed the live foyer screening and also the free viewing on the Civic Precinct lawns.

Saturday, July 11 was one rocking MECC opening day that also launched the Deep Hearts Festival of Arts program for 2009.
