2011 Jack Sturgeon Bursary Nominations now open for aspiring performers
Young performers in the region are being encouraged to apply for a $1000 student bursary in memory of the late Jack Sturgeon.
Mayor Col Meng said Jack Sturgeon was a well-known Mackay identity and life-long supporter of Mackay’s performing arts.
“The Jack Sturgeon Bursary seeks to support and encourage young people who wish to pursue a career in performing arts,” Cr Meng said.
“This annual bursary recognises Jack Sturgeon’s service and enthusiasm for performing arts, and seeks applications that demonstrate that same enthusiasm.”
Any current Year 12 student, who gains acceptance into a recognised performing arts tertiary course in 2011, is eligible to apply for the bursary. This includes any aspect of music, dance, signing, drama or theatre.
Year 12 students interested in applying must outline why they should be considered for the bursary, details about their proposed university course and a resume of performance achievements.
Applications for the bursary close at 5pm on Friday, January 19, 2011.
A panel of three professionals from the performing arts field will evaluate applications and interview short-listed applications with the successful applicant being announced mid-February 2011 following confirmation of university places.
Cr Meng said the $1000 bursary may be used for tuition fees, text books, or equipment required as part of the student’s studies.
The last two successful applicants include aspiring flautist and pianist Simone Maurer (2010) and aspiring actor Stephanie Thuesen (2009).
