The main event of the Festival of Arts is held annually at the beautiful Queens Park. Last year saw a record crowd of 27,000 people attend. Great family entertainment, top bands, wandering street entertainers, food and craft stalls selling the best local wares and two licensed areas. There are kid’s amusements and workshops for craft activities for all ages from 11 am to 6 pm. This year we are proud to announce that we will be hosting the XXXX Mini Retreat and XXXX Island Challenge interactive shuffle board game - where one lucky player will be in the running to win a holiday trip with friends to the XXXX Island!
Porters Blues & Roots Stage
The day starts off with a fantastic kids band The Mudcakes who the New York Times voted in the top ten of music for kids. It will then be followed by the cream of the CQU Jazz course who tear up the town as the CQUNI Soul Raiders. The Fat Cigars will have you jumping and jiving to their 60’s and 70’s funk and then The Twoks will amaze you with violinist Xani Koch’s virtuosity as this Melbourne jazz fusion band weaves its musical magic.
Now that you are in the mood,8 Ball Aitken will leave you wanting more as his blues repertoire heard and seen all over Australia lets rip. Then another Melbourne sensation, Lime Cordiale will keep you dancing until rock legends Darryl Cotton, Jim Keays and Russell Morris blow your socks off as the headline act.
These three are all members of the Australian Rock n’ Roll Hall of fame for their work with Zoot, The Masters Apprentices and a solo career built around Morris’ The Real Thing - still one of Australia’s biggest ever single in terms of sales.
Mackay Airport Big Top
This is the home of the best Indie Music Mackay has to offer. Tale of Temple were big hits of the Easter Laneway Festival. If they are not enough and believe you me they are incredible, wait ‘til you hear the voice of John Ward, in Ray Finn, described as a “tortured angel dipped in molasses” this Melbourne duo marks the return of John to his old stomping grounds and you will be stomping too. New kids on the block Skin ‘N’ Bone and country and western sensation from Victoria Sherry Rich and the New Folk Heroes will be joining them on the bill. To round off the afternoon we have local bands Viper Syndicate and Razor tearing up the stage.
